Chapter the Thirty-Second: This is about Elections. And Baseball. And Jon Stewart.
Well. It's been an interesting few days here on campus, what with there being many people from New England about and many people from New York about. I have friends on both sides of the Red Sox/Yankees coin, and quite frankly, all I can say is 'Bah.' I've never seen fans so crazy, and I'm from the land of the Green Bay Packers. There wasn't burning things and cars being flipped over at UWGB in '96/'97. Maybe we're just less repressed in the Midwest, and these East Coast people have to get their feelings out sometime. You know they aren't doing it when they're standing in front of you in line and grunt a greeting.
Anyway, politics are also heating up here, as they are everywhere else. The best place to get one's pulse on the campus feeling is on
the Jolt, where people publish their unpopular opinions without signing their names. Ah, bliss. Some conservatives feel repressed, apparently--now, I like conservatives pretty much, as long as we aren't talking politics. I just think that George W. Bush is screwing up this country, and I don't see why someone who is a woman, a person of color, and/or a queer would vote for him. Kerry is good on health care and better on queer issues and issues of women's rights and the rights of those who have less money. He's not perfect. His wife isn't perfect. But I think he's the better candidate, and I sent my ballot in yesterday having voted Kerry/Edwards.
That's my endorsement.
Also, what's interesting around here is the fact that Jon Stewart has become an icon of sorts. Everyone is watching Jon Stewart. Everyone is talking about what he has to say and about the incident on Crossfire last week. It's very interesting...he's almost deified, but people are worrying the man is going to snap. Frankly, I think it's possible...there's a lot of pressure on one comedian, who's now supposed to handle half of America's news-watching public.
But the man is funny. He's just become ever more partisan as time's gone by, and I hope that doesn't cause issues. Maybe he should be president. In the meantime, let's hope the media doesn't flake out and canonize the poor man before he deserves it.
