Chapter the Fourteenth: Holiday Road
Hey all. It's finally Spring Break, so don't look for updates this week. I'll be back next Monday or so with more ranting and raving.
Chapter the Thirteenth: In Which Rhi Is Bothered by Asshattery
I am apathetic, so I think I'm going to write briefly about that. Midterms are over for me, which is good, but that means that I feel the rest of the week is a wash. This does not particularly please me, as I don't leave for Julie's until Saturday, and responsibilities for the week basically now consist of getting out of bed.
Apparently, my boss tells me, things at Smith are not only in a havoc among the students and the RADS workers, but also among other staffers--she knows a cut's coming to her department but doesn't know who will be laid off. The ax. That general malaise is probably adding to the stress that seems to crash down upon our heads.
I had something that was bothering me. A woman in one of my classes (I keep having this tendency to say girl...don't know why) who seems to be a very intelligent person...a fellow film!bitch...is a pro-lifer. It's not that which bothers me, as I'm used to that kind of mentality from living at home for eighteen plus years. It's the fact that she's a pro-life feminist.
And that her argument (emblazoned on her NalgeneŽ) is "Equal Rights for Unborn Women".
The justification behind this, which she posted on the Jolt (thread is
here, hers is at 10:38 PM) a few weeks back when the issue came up, is that if the baby's not born, how can we 'ensure' a man be held responsible for a child; that allowing abortion means that the 'woman's fault' mentality will continue and by killing the 'unborn children' we continue to keep ourselves down under patriarchy.
[groans]
I just...don't understand. I can get pro-lifers with their flawed religious rhetoric, but this? I don't know. How can we ever hope to do anything without control over our own bodies first? A woman shouldn't have all the 'fault' no matter WHAT happens. On one hand, her argument makes sense, but on the other, it totally means compromising oneself to fit the patriarchy before we move forward. That, my friends, is unacceptable.
Whatever. Talk about this.
