Chapter the Twelfth: Bitchin' and Moanin' and Pitchin' a Fit (Business as Usual).
I personally have been suffering from exhaustion and stress this past week, and I know that fellow Smithies have been as well. I'm not sure for the reasons, though midterms are probably part of it. However, there's just something about the conflicting views and the like that have really pushed everyone to their limits, much like this time last year with the war. This time everyone's focusing on gay marriage, abortion issues, the election, and budget woes on campus.
With all this going on, I fear that people will miss the real issue, which is the fact that somehow gender neutral language has come up again in the SGA (student government) constitution. As in a revote of last year's decision to use 'the student' instead of 'she' in the student created constitution for the SGA. Apparently people who were abroad and didn't pay attention to shit are saying that they didn't get the opportunity to vote and whining, and also using the first years by saying that 'they didn't get to vote either'.
Bitch, PLEASE. When will we get past ourselves? It was voted on, and if people were too stupid not to realize what was going on, then that was their issue not to vote. A friend of mine who was abroad DID vote last year.
Of course, this isn't even taking into consideration my personal views, which have gotten stronger in the past year: There are trans people on campus. The 'Why are they at Smith' question isn't relevant--they're here because they want to be and because they belong here. Smith picked them from their applications. By saying 'so if they're male...why come to a women's college?' (and implying 'if they THINK they're male), the campus at large is:
-Ignoring the entire trans community internationally and the very real issues they face everywhere in the world (and questioning their gender for them, which is NOT COOL)
-Refusing to recognize people who don't identify as 'he' or 'she' who are here, as well as forgetting that there are transmen who are comfortable in their female bodies, and that gender is not binary.
So if this gets past the Senate (I don't know if it will), please think about the revote, Smithies. Supporting it is keeping people down--there are more marginalized people here than most liberals think about.
And to those who were whining about this (and I know one of them, she's upstairs right now):
Get over it.
